3 mistakes to avoid after a car accident

In the moments after a car accident in Connecticut, you may not be thinking clearly. That is incredibly common since you just went through something traumatic, regardless of how minor the accident is. However, if you do not pull yourself together, you could make some costly mistakes in the aftermath of an accident.

It is a good idea to think ahead and prepare for an accident that could happen. By having a plan, it will be easier for you to jump into action if an accident really does happen. Here are three mistakes that you want to avoid if you end up in a crash.

  1. Not documenting the scene

Fox Business suggests that you should take as many notes and pictures of the accident scene as possible if you can. Just grab your cellphone and start taking pictures of both vehicles and the surrounding area. Documenting the scene can come in handy later when you are negotiating with insurance companies or trying to prove your case in court.

  1. Talking too much

You should never admit guilt or say you are sorry. The other driver could use this against you. You should just exchange information and ask questions of witnesses. Do not get too chatty. Any information you give to the other driver beyond the basics could hurt you in the long run.

  1. Handling things between you and the other driver

It is tempting to just keep things simple by exchanging information and going your own ways after a small fender bender, but you should always contact authorities. You want an official report of the incident on file for insurance and legal purposes. Make sure to call law enforcement before you leave the scene.

An accident can rattle you, but having a plan beforehand may save you a lot of trouble. Knowing these three things you should not do will help you to avoid doing them in the heat of the moment.
