3 dangerous choices people commonly make at stoplights

On Behalf of | Sep 18, 2024 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Stoplights can help prevent collisions. Municipal authorities can program traffic lights to change at different rates depending on the flow of traffic through an intersection at different times. Stoplights help prevent traffic congestion and can lead to improved safety for motorists.

Unfortunately, not everyone who approaches a traffic light makes the best decision when they enter the intersection. The three mistakes below are relatively common at traffic lights and can lead to collisions that may put people in the hospital or worse.

Running a red light

Sometimes, people simply don’t want to stop when they approach an intersection. They may quickly scan traffic and decide that there aren’t enough vehicles approaching to make a stop necessary. Oftentimes, those drivers misjudge the situation. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, at least 1,149 people in the United States died in 2022 because people ran red lights.  Many of the people who died were on foot or on bicycles.

Texting at the light

Distraction is dangerous at any point in traffic, including while idling at a red light. Drivers who pick up their phones aren’t able to properly monitor their surroundings. They may not notice when the light turns green and could end up getting rear-ended by another driver. They may also remain distracted even after they put their phone down. They could cause a crash as they proceed forward through the intersection because they did not properly check their surroundings.

Turning left

Especially at intersections where there is no left turn lane, choosing to turn left can be dangerous. A driver turning left has lengthy exposure to all approaching lanes of traffic during the turn. They can end up involved in a life-threatening angle collision. At a light without a left turn lane, other drivers may not notice their turn signal and could hit them from behind. Left-hand turns are technically legal, but they can be a dangerous maneuver in certain circumstances.

Motorists generally need to pay close attention to their surroundings and make smart choices based on traffic conditions. Those involved in motor vehicle collisions may need to take action to hold the driver at fault accountable. Both insurance claims and lawsuits can potentially lead to compensation for those injured in intersection collisions.
