Determine injuries

Never leave the scene of an accident. If you can safely do so, make sure other drivers and passengers are safe. Seek medical attention if needed.

Move to safety

If able, safely drive the car off the road. Turn hazard lights on and alert other drivers. Leave vehicles in place if the accident or injuries are severe.

Call the police

Report the accident to the police. Document the officer’s contact information (name, badge number and contact information). Get an accident report from the officer at the scene or request a copy.

Collect important information

Document everyone’s contact information, as well as the year, make, model and license plate number of all involved vehicles.

Collect the other driver’s insurance information (policy number and company’s phone number) in case they do not report. Document witness contact information and their statements of what happened. Never share social security numbers, policy coverage limits or other personal information.

Take pictures and record photos or videos of the accident scene.

Even if you feel fine, a post-accident injury can present itself after a day or two. Minor accidents can result in severe injuries. Visit a doctor if there is pain or unusual symptoms.

To avoid panic after an accident, keep important information in your car, like registration, proof of insurance, contact information and a list of things to remember in an accident.
