Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data shows that 5,147 workers died in what’s been described as accidental workplace deaths in 2017. While this number decreased by 43 people over what it was in 2016, worker fatality rates are significantly higher than they were 10 years ago. While an uptick in drug overdoses has resulted in many of these accidental deaths, some professions are just flat out more dangerous than others.

The three most dangerous jobs that an individual can have include fishing, logging or working as a flight engineer or airplane pilot.

Those who work in fishing have an on-the-job death rate of 100 per 100,000 workers. In 2017, 120 people who work in this profession were injured whereas 41 of them were killed. Most of the individuals who lost their lives did so as the result of becoming involved in a transportation accident. This was often caused by poor weather or environmental factors. Many fishermen died from accidental drownings because of this.

Loggers were the second most commonly injured worker in 2017. An average of 87.3 per 100,000 logging workers died in 2017. This equates to 350 suffering nonfatal injuries and 55 suffering fatal ones. Logging workers often were injured or died from objects or equipment falling on them. When they get hurt, they’re often too far away from getting the medical attention that they need.

Flight engineers and aircraft pilots are the third type of professional most likely to get hurt or killed on the job. In 2017, 51.3 per 100,000 of the individuals holding these roles died in their workplace. Some 630 workers suffered nonlife-threatening injuries that year and 59 died.

The most common reason for these individuals’ deaths is plane crashes. Analysts believe that job stress, exhaustion and having to work long hours may all make them vulnerable to having an accident.

There is a variety of injuries that workers may suffer that are covered under Connecticut workers’ compensation laws. In many cases, your right to claim these may be allowed for only a short period of time. Individuals in Stamford who have been hurt on the job should consult with a workers’ compensation attorney and act quickly in order to protect their right to these benefits.
