Understanding the causes and effects of wrist injuries

One of the most common workplace injuries reported by workers in Connecticut and elsewhere is wrist pain. Most workers use their hands, and the wrist is a critical joint that can be injured in a variety of ways. Many kinds of injury can cause wrist pain, and an accurate diagnosis is a vital part of effective treatment.

Wrist pain comes in several flavors. For instance, carpal tunnel syndrome is marked by a "pins and needles" felling. Osteoarthritis is more like a dull toothache.

The causes can be varied. A sudden impact occasioned by a sudden fall can cause strains and fractures. A scaphoid injury involves a small bone just below the thumb, and fractures of this bone may not even appear on x-rays.

Repetitive stress injuries are common in workers whose duties involve repetitive wrist motion. Long-distance drivers, musicians who play stringed instruments and typists can develop repetitive stress injuries. Other injuries include carpal tunnel syndrome, an inflammation of the tunnel that surrounds the median never as it passes through a passage on the palm side of the wrist. Ganglion cysts occur in the wrist opposite the palm. These cysts can be very painful.

Work duties that involve the frequent use of the hand or the wrist are one of the chief causes of wrist pain, especially carpal tunnel syndrome and repetitive stress syndrome. While recreational activities can cause wrist pain, work duties are frequent causes of wrist pain. Severe wrist pain can significantly interfere with a person's ability to use their hands in their work.

A person who has suffered wrist pain as the result of an on-the-job injury may be eligible for workers' compensation benefits. An experienced workers' compensation attorney can provide assistance in finding adequate medical care and in filing an application for workers' compensation benefits.
