Connecticut postal worker injured on the job

Postal workers work rain or shine, snow or wind. A Connecticut postal worker may be unable to keep up the typical postal worker's diligent schedule, however, after a recent and serious injury at work.

The 52-year-old postal employee was walking in the parking lot of the U.S. Postal Service's Southern Connecticut Processing & Distribution Center when he was run over by a truck. The 46-year-old driver of the 2007 International 4000 series box truck was in the process of backing up to a loading dock at the distribution center when the incident occurred. The driver works for a company that serves as a contractor for the U.S. Postal Service, and the truck is registered to that company.

After being struck by the truck, the injured postal worker fell onto the pavement and the back tires of the truck ran over his midsection. Fortunately, he did not remain pinned under the truck. The injured postal worker suffered serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to Yale New Haven Hospital. This serious incident could lead to the victim suffering from a spine injury or other back injury.

Postal workers may be able to obtain workers' compensation benefits through the Federal Employees Compensation Act. Connecticut workers who are employed by independent contractors or state and local government agencies can pursue workers' compensation benefits through the state.

The incident is being investigated by the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration, as well as local police, and charges have not yet been filed against the driver. Connecticut residents will surely hope that this postal employee makes a full recovery after this frightening workplace accident and can return to his postal duties.
