Workers' comp may provide relief for asbestos-related illnesses

Many Connecticut residents are aware of the dangers of asbestos. Asbestos, which was commonly used in shipyards and industrial facilities, as well as old schools or public buildings, has microscopic fibers that a person can breathe in. These fibers cause damage to a person's lungs and can lead to mesothelioma cancer. A person who has worked in one of these facilities, or in another facility in which asbestos was present, may have been put at risk for mesothelioma cancer through possible long-term exposure to toxic chemicals.

By the 1930s, the dangers of asbestos were well-known. However, asbestos continued to be used for many more years, putting countless more people at risk for developing serious illnesses. Connecticut has a particularly close relationship with asbestos dangers. With miles of coastline and an economy built on naval shipyards and shipping ports, many employees in the shipping and sailing industries were exposed to asbestos. Aircraft manufacturers, industrial mines, and the state's former asbestos mine all created potential risks for their employees through possible exposure to asbestos.

A worker or the worker's family may be able to recover workers' compensation for an asbestos-related illness. Cancer related to one's job represents a large percentage of occupational deaths in the United States, and the workers' compensation system may be available to assist these workers. Workers' compensation benefits may assist workers and families in covering past and future lost wages, medical expenses and vocational rehabilitation.

If you or a loved one has had long-term exposure to toxic chemicals, or even short-term exposure that you think has caused injury, there may be benefits available. These benefits may improve your quality of life and ease any suffering experienced. An attorney familiar with asbestos-related illnesses and the workers' compensation system may be able to assist.
