A Norwalk man is charged with causing a motorcyclist's death

An 18-year-old Norwalk resident was taken into custody by the Stamford Police Department on Jan. 18 for his role in causing a fatal motorcycle crash in September of last year.

According to a spokesperson with the police department's Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad, the young man had been driving his Jeep Wrangler along Tressler Boulevard shortly before 7 p.m., when he attempted to turn onto Canal Street. The Jeep and a motorcycle, which was being operated by a 26-year-old Stamford resident, collided at that intersection.

Paramedics who arrived at the crash scene found the motorcyclist suffering from severe blunt force trauma. They placed him in an ambulance and transported him to Stamford Hospital. The motorcyclist died soon after his arrival there.

When the defendant turned himself into police on Jan. 18, he was booked into jail on charges of misconduct with a motor vehicle. He was later released after posting a $10,000 bail.

His next hearing in the matter is scheduled to take place in front of a Stamford Superior Court judge on Feb. 1. It's unclear how he was inappropriately operating his vehicle at the time of the crash or why it took police investigators several months to decide to charge him.

Some of the most common causes of motorcycle accidents include distracted or drunk driving, poor visibility or road conditions and motorists following motorcyclists too closely. Connecticut motorcycle riders are also particularly vulnerable to being struck at intersections.

Determining responsibility isn't always easy to do; however, an experienced attorney will have the necessary skills and resources to help individuals build a personal injury or wrongful death claim.
