Study reveals high rate of Connecticut workplace injuries

According to a new report, Connecticut workers are at risk. Specifically, the report, released by UConn Health, indicates that the rate of workplace injuries and illnesses is increasing at an alarming rate in the state, and is well above the national average for workers' injuries.

The report compiled data from the national Bureau of Labor Statistics, physician reports, a survey from the Connecticut Labor Department and Workers' Compensation. This data revealed that, in 2014, Connecticut's rate of occupational illness was seven percent higher than the national average, with 18.7 illnesses per 10,000 workers. This is the seventh straight year, since state and national data was able to be compared, that Connecticut's rate of occupational illness has exceeded the national average. Furthermore, the study revealed that the rate of workplace injuries is on the rise in Connecticut, increasing by eight percent from 2013.

There are a variety of illnesses and injuries encompassed under occupational illnesses, including preventable illnesses. Of the 8,257 occupational illness cases reported in 2014, roughly 3,500 of the cases were due to musculoskeletal ailments, 2,500 to infectious diseases and 650 to respiratory matters. The industries with the highest rates of illness and injury include the health and education sectors, followed by the government, manufacturing and transportation sectors.

Many of these illnesses and injuries may have been due to preventable workplace accidents, such as through the use of safer chemicals or safety improvements in working environments. This data reveals that Connecticut's employers still have strides to make in creating a safe working environment for their employees. If you have suffered an injury or illness related to your job, you may be entitled to workers' compensation benefits. An attorney can offer guidance.
