Connecticut workers face risk of poisoning due to toxic exposure

An illness such as the flu or pneumonia can cause a Connecticut worker to miss time from work. Such an illness may be expected and involve a quick recovery, however. In contrast, what workers may not anticipate is that they will contract a serious illness because of the nature of their workplace.

If a worker develops an illness due to exposure or a particular event in his or her work environment, he or she may have what is known as a work-related illness. Connecticut workers may develop illnesses that stem from poisoning in the workplace. Poisoning may occur when a person has an abnormal concentration of a toxic substance in his or her tissues, blood, breath or other bodily fluids.

Common examples of workplace poisoning include poisoning by gases, such as carbon monoxide or hydrogen sulfide. Organic solvents such as carbon tetrachloride or benzene may also poison a worker. A worker who handles certain metals such as arsenic, lead, mercury or cadmium may develop toxic levels of these substances in his or her body. Chemicals such as formaldehyde, and insecticide sprays such as lead arsenate, may also lead to a worker becoming ill due to poisoning.

Poisoning may seem like something that happens only in the movies, but, unfortunately, it can happen in an everyday working environment. Workers who are suffering from poisoning that stems from their work environment, or another work-related illness, may be eligible for workers' compensation benefits. An attorney may be able to provide guidance and assistance to an ailing worker.
