What types of injuries are covered by workers' compensation?

The system of workers' compensation benefits allows workers to request payment of benefits if they have been injured or become ill in the course of their employment. The system works as a tremendous safety net for employees who suffer from a work-related back injury or other work-related injury to allow an injured worker, and his or her employer, to avoid litigation while still providing a much-needed fixed monetary award to the worker.

There are many types of injuries that may be covered under the Connecticut workers' compensation system, just as there are many different injuries a worker may suffer on-the-job. For example, a worker who has a preexisting condition such as a back or neck injury and finds that his or her condition is further aggravated by the workplace may be able to recover benefits.

A worker who contracts a disease from the workplace, such as lung cancer due to exposure to toxins, may be able to recover workers' compensation benefits as well. A stressful job, or increased job responsibilities at work, may lead a worker to suffer from physical and mental strain that may result in a worker needing medical treatment, and thereby incurring medical expenses. This too may be covered under the workers' compensation system. Even if a worker is injured during his or her lunch hour or during a company picnic, he or she may be able to recover benefits despite not actually being in the act of working when an injury occurred.

All on-the-job injuries are not covered by workers' compensation, but a worker should not make the determination that his or her injury will not be covered before speaking with an experienced attorney who may be able to help the injured worker evaluate his or her particular injury and the accompanying circumstances.
