Common illnesses in the workplace

Each year, workers suffer a variety of workplace illnesses which can place great strain on them and their families. Workers can suffer from workplace illnesses and injuries in offices, warehouses, outdoor work environments and a variety of other types of workplaces. Each workplace illness or accident has the potential to have a detrimental impact on the daily lives of workers, possibly requiring medical care and treatment and making earning a living a challenge.

There are a variety of different types of workplace illnesses that can, unfortunately for workers, be common in the workplace. During 2010, 46.9 out of 10,000 workplace-related illnesses and injuries were the result of sprains, strains and tears. In addition, musculoskeletal illnesses and injuries account for 34.3 out of 10,000 workplace illnesses and injuries. Overall body pain, including in the back, accounted for 13.3 out of 10,000 workplace illnesses and injuries; 11 percent of these illnesses and injuries required at-home recovery or recovery at a convalescence center. Back pain was reported in 4 out of 10,000 workplace illnesses and injuries. Additionally, 27 out of 10,000 workplace illnesses and injuries were the result of overexertion which was in increase from previous years.

Additional types of common workplace illnesses and injuries include bruises and contusions which are involved in 9.9 out of every 10,000 workplace illnesses and injuries and result in a median of 4 days away from work to heal. Cuts, lacerations and punctures account for 9.1 out of every 10,000 workplace illnesses and injuries and vulnerable parts of the body are often involved including hands. Fractures in the workplace account for 8.5 out of 10,000 reported workplace illnesses and injuries and usually required 28 days away from work to heal. Additional workplace illnesses and injuries, including scalds and burns and combined illnesses and injuries, are also a serious concern for workers.

It is important that workers are protected in their workplaces. When they suffer an occupational illness or injury in a workplace accident, options are available to them, including workers' compensation benefits that can help with the medical expenses and lost wages oftentimes associated with harm suffered in the workplace.
