Report identifies most common workplace injuries

Connecticut residents may be interested in a recent report released by the Travelers Companies Inc. that reveals the massive impact of workplace injuries across the nation. The Injury Impact Report identifies common causes for workplace injuries and accidents, and notes that each year approximately 3.7 million workers suffer work-related injuries, a staggering number.

The report identified several of the most common workplace injuries by looking at 1.5 million workers' compensation claims filed between 2010 and 2014. The most common cause of injury, with 32 percent of claims, was due to material handling, which most often happened in the retail and manufacturing industries. Slips, trips and falls accounted for 16 percent of workplace injuries. Additional common causes of injury and workplace accidents included being struck by an object, accidents that involved tools, and other traumas that occurred over time, such as through repetitive strain or overuse of a body part.

These common injuries and accidents frequently led to a person suffering from inflammation, fractures, strains, cuts, sprains, punctures or contusions. Fracture injuries and inflammation led workers to miss the most time away from work, with workers with fracture injuries missing on average 78 days of work, and workers with inflammation missing an average of 91 days of work. Strains and sprains caused workers to miss an average of 57 days away from the job. In the retail and construction industries, falls were identified as a common source of injury, and eye injuries were a common source of injury in both the construction and manufacturing industries.

If you have suffered from one of these common workers' injuries or another on-the-job injury, you may be entitled to workers' compensation benefits. An attorney can offer guidance during the process of applying for benefits.
