Dangerous Connecticut construction site leads to fines

After allowing several construction workers to work in a seriously dangerous work environment, a Connecticut construction company is facing substantial fines. A recent investigation of Whole Life Construction LLC revealed significant OSHA violations that posed the potential for major construction accidents.

An OSHA investigation of a residential roofing job by the company in Bridgeport revealed two violations of workplace safety standards. Four workers were performing their duties without proper fall protection. Specifically, one worker was operating on a scaffold that was not properly braced or erected, and faced a possible 26 foot fall, and three were working on a roof with the possibility of a 20 foot fall. The employer had not trained its employees in fall protection, nor in scaffold hazards. Furthermore, workers were at risk for electrical accidents, as they were working too close to energized power lines.

OSHA has imposed fines of more than $48,000 against Whole Life Construction LLC for its safety violations. This is not the first time the company has been cited for safety violations. Previous violations occurred at Danbury and New Haven work sites, and now OSHA has included Whole Life Construction in its Severe Violators Enforcement Program. This program, which is designed to monitor those employers who repeatedly commit violations and endanger workers, allows OSHA to inspect any of Whole Life Construction's facilities if it reasonably believes there are other similar violations.

A construction worker whose employer fails to take proper safety precautions on the jobsite may be at an increased risk for dangerous construction site accidents. If a worker becomes injured, or suspects that his or her work environment does not meet safety standards, he or she may wish to seek legal counsel.
