Connecticut chimney worker dies following fall

Working inside of a chimney involves a great deal of skill and dexterity. It takes a special worker who knows how to work in a confined space. And even for these skilled workers, there are still numerous risks present. Tragically, one of these skilled workers has died recently in Connecticut following a terrible fall from a ladder.

Recently, a 55-year-old male worker was working inside a large chimney at the Central Power Plant for Yale University when he fell 40 feet down off of a ladder. The worker, who was initially trapped inside the chimney for approximately an hour, was freed by the New Haven Fire Department who had to break into the chimney from the outside. The injured worker, who was transported to the hospital in extremely critical condition, did not survive his injuries.

The worker was wearing a harness while doing repair work inside the smokestack. A coworker with International Chimney initially came to his aid. He provided emergency medical care to the injured worker in the smokestack, which was not in operation at the time of the accident, before the Fire Department was able to gain access to the man. Investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is ongoing.

While it will not bring their loved one back, it may be possible for his family to obtain workers' compensation benefits. Workers' compensation benefits are available not just for those workers that may need physical rehabilitation, but may also be available for the families of workers who have died from fatal workplace injuries.

Death benefits for family members can provide a great deal of financial support following the death of a loved one who may have been a family's primary financial provider. Loved ones should take the steps to better understand the options available to him or her so an informed decision can be timely made.
