Construction worker falls to death when bridge collapses

Connecticut construction workers try very hard to make their work sites as safe as they can, and the State of Connecticut has many regulations designed to prevent construction site accidents. Nonetheless, construction sites remain inherently dangerous places.

Recently, a construction worker fell to his death when he was working to dismantle a railroad bridge over a freeway in California. Authorities said the man was cutting part of the bridge in two when the structure buckled and fell. According to the state's Department of Transportation, the worker, who was strapped to the bridge on a safety harness, was pulled to the ground along with the structure, landing on pavement. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was declared dead.

The demolition of the bridge is part of a $232 million project to widen a freeway.

In Connecticut, workers who are injured on a construction site can seek help for medical expenses and lost wages through workers' compensation benefits. In the case of a fatal accident, the victim's family may be entitled to benefits.

Whenever a tragic accident occurs on a construction site, Connecticut's Occupational Safety and Health Administration investigates, and hopefully everyone involved redoubles their efforts to ensure safety. In the mean time, the injured or the families of those who were killed are left with mounting medical expenses and without the income to pay their bills.

When the workers' compensation system works as it should, the injured receive their benefits in a timely manner. However, many complications can come up before the injured or their families get the benefits they deserve. A Connecticut workers' compensation attorney can help cut through red tape and make the system work for the workers.
