Four hurt in Connecticut construction accident

Four people were hurt recently in a construction site accident when workers were trying to lift a heavy cast-iron bath tub to the third floor of a home under construction in Connecticut. The workers were carrying the tub, which weighs between 200 and 300 pounds, when the temporary stairs they were using collapsed beneath them.

The men fell 15 to 20 feet to the basement of the home, and one of the temporary stairways fell on top of them. Firefighters who arrived on scene had to construct a rope-and-pulley system to lift the injured workers out of the debris.

One of the workers suffered a broken leg in the accident. Another had a broken ankle, and the others complained of head pain and other injuries.

An inspector from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration criticized the worksite, noting that a forklift on the premises should have been used to lift the heavy tub. The owner of the property was reportedly serving as general contractor on the construction project. OSHA will reportedly investigate the incident and determine whether any fines should be imposed against the property owner.

Most Connecticut workers injured on the job are entitled to benefits through the state's workers' compensation system. Workers' compensation benefits are meant to reduce the need for expensive and time-consuming lawsuits against employers. Still, many workers find they need legal help when getting the benefits they need proves to be more difficult than it should be.

Accidents can happen at any type of workplace, but employers have certain duties to provide their workers with a reasonably safe place to work. When an unsafe work site leads to injuries, it's especially important that injured workers get the benefits they deserve.
