Concrete wall falls on Connecticut construction worker

A construction worker was injured recently after a retaining wall fell on him at a Connecticut worksite. He was transported to a hospital by helicopter. His condition had not been reported as of the time of this writing.

Fire officials said the injured worker was part of a crew digging near the wall to install new curbing when the wall fell on him. Concrete pinned the worker against a dump truck, officials said. Emergency workers arrived and freed him, but he went into cardiac arrest and had to be resuscitated. Police and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating the accident.

When Connecticut construction workers are hurt on the job, the costs can be enormous. They face medical expense, lost wages, rehabilitation costs and other damages. Fortunately, they can generally be compensated for these losses through workers' compensation benefits.

Most Connecticut employers are required to carry workers' compensation insurance to help pay the benefits when workers are injured on the job. In the case of fatal accidents, there may also be benefits paid to the victim's family.

When all goes smoothly, the worker and his or her family get the help they need without having to resort to a lawsuit, and without having to prove that the company was at fault for their injury. However, filing a workers' compensation claim is often a tricky process, and employers often don't want to pay the full benefit amount that the worker deserves. It's often a good idea for Connecticut workers to have help filing their workers' compensation claims. Moreover, in the event of a dispute over the full amount of the claim, it's definitely a good idea for injured workers to have help on their side.
