Connecticut construction worker dies after a fall

Despite explicit and stringent Occupational Safety and Health Administration guidelines concerning workers functioning at tall heights, falls continue to be one of the leading causes of worker deaths. Construction industry workers are undoubtedly at higher risk of falls than workers in other industries, given the nature of their jobs.

Recently, a Connecticut construction worker accident resulted in the death of a 35-year-old man from New Haven. The accident occurred in Middlefield, located about 40 miles northeast of Bridgeport.

The accident occurred in the morning hours when the worker fell from a height of about 12 feet while at work on a Cherry Hill Road house that is under construction. The worker suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The worker was employed by Luanci Construction LLC. The North Haven company is in charge of the Cherry Hill Road construction site. The company is already on OSHA's radar for another similar accident, wherein a worker fell while working on a different residential house. According to OSHA records, the company was fined $11,400 for safety violations following an investigation after the 2011 incident.

Reportedly, a co-worker on the scene witnessed the accidental death of the worker. OSHA is currently investigating the cause of the accident. OSHA directed an investigator to the accident site, along with a representative of the State Medical Examiner's Office. The Bridgeport OSHA office has confirmed that a compliance officer was also on the accident site to investigate the accident. OSHA is required by law to complete their investigation and issue any citations within six months of the accident.

The 35-year-old worker is survived by a spouse and a child. Circumstances like these are quite difficult for surviving family members, both emotionally and financially. Dependents of deceased workers should be aware of their rights under the workers' compensation laws. In the case of a worker fatality, dependents may be awarded funeral costs and death benefits in the form of weekly wage benefits.
